Ten metres under the Old Town are Gothic rooms that were ground floors until the city raised itself out of the Vltava floods. The evening version adds the executioner and the golem.

The boat turns below Charles Bridge with the castle floodlit behind it, which is the photograph everybody comes home with. Cheaper than the beer you drink on board.

Old towns and hilltop castles run right across Central Europe. A chapel decorated with forty thousand people, a bunker built for the end of the world, and a bath full of beer do not.
The Sedlec Ossuary
Plague and the Hussite wars filled the monastery graveyard past its walls, and the bones were stacked in the chapel below it for four hundred years. In 1870 a woodcarver was hired to arrange them properly, and he built a chandelier said to use every bone in the human body. It is an hour out of Prague by train, and entry runs on timed slots.

The nuclear bunker
The city is undercut with shelters dug for a war that never arrived, and one of the largest still holds its gas masks and Soviet filtration gear. The tours pair the tunnels with the streets above, where the tanks came in 1968 and the crowds came back in 1989 with keys in their hands.

The beer spa
You sit in a wooden tub of warm water, hops and brewer's yeast, with a tap of unfiltered beer beside it that you are expected to use. Czechs will tell you the yeast is good for your skin. Either way, an hour in the tub after a day on cobbles is not a hard sell.

Prague at four in the afternoon in December.
This is one of the drier corners of Europe, but what rain there is arrives in summer thunderstorms, and in midwinter the light is gone before four. Neither is a reason to sit in the hotel: most of what the Czechs do well happens indoors, and a fair amount of it happens underground.
